How hard is it to learn Chinese?

Teaching yourself Chinese isn’t as hard as it seems. To avoid getting stuck in grammar drills and dry textbooks, this audio course is a solid starting point. In a short time you’ll build practical Chinese for travelers and business trips. The sound and melody of the language help you memorize words and pronunciation. You’ll see progress quickly and stay motivated. Still, consistency and regular repetition are the foundation for real improvement.

How can you learn Chinese on your own?

As more people want to learn Chinese, there are now plenty of beginner courses. Many still prefer self-study without a teacher. YouTube, podcasts, and movies in Chinese help a lot. If you’d like something more structured, pick an online course or app (e.g., Rosetta Stone, Duolingo, Busuu). You can also fit audio language courses easily into your day and learn Chinese on the side. If you explore Chinese cuisine and music—or life in Beijing—you’ll notice how much influence China still has.

Where is Chinese spoken?

Many don’t realize Chinese is spoken and understood not only in China itself but also in several neighboring countries. Chinese, particularly Mandarin, is the most spoken language in the world, with over one billion native speakers. It is the official language of China and Taiwan and one of the official languages of Singapore and the United Nations. Chinese belongs to the Sino-Tibetan language family and uses characters that represent meaning rather than sound. As China plays an increasingly important role in the global economy, culture, and technology, learning Chinese provides valuable insight into one of the world’s oldest civilizations and growing economic powers.

How long does it take to learn Chinese?

Our experience with this Chinese course: if you practice 15 minutes a day, after a week many words will feel familiar, and after 14 days you’ll command most of the common vacation phrases (greetings, where is…?, I would like…, etc.). The course includes about 100 everyday phrases—including how to ask for Wi-Fi or the restroom.
If you want to go deeper and stay in China longer, aim for a daily vocabulary of at least 800 words (roughly high-school level) to express yourself well and understand the essentials. With 3,000 words (C1 certificate) people will still notice you’re not a native, but you’ll sound polished. The active vocabulary of a native speaker starts around 15,000 words. How long it takes you depends on how often you can practice.

What makes this Chinese course different?

Unlike a VHS, Babbel, or podcast course, with the audio course Learn Chinese for Beginners you can review all the essential vacation vocabulary in just one hour—free. It’s ideal if you’re short on time, don’t want fluff, and still want to be understood everywhere with a few words. If you enjoy this online/offline course, check out our other language courses.
